Something for Swimmers of all ages!

Discover the Joy of Competitive Swim

Summer swim team offers children and teens the opportunity to experience competitive swimming without the demands of school teams or club swimming. Through the swim team, children develop their swimming skills while simultaneously building community with kids of all ages and swimming abilities. Our team includes swimmers who are new to the sport, returning summer swimmers, and year-round competitive swimmers. All children are welcome to participate, regardless of their swimming skill.

Some of our swimmers have joined their school teams or have pursued year-round club swim participation after being introduced to swimming through summer league. Begin your child’s journey today!

Frequently Asked Questions

Swimming Proficiency

Any swimmer age 4-18 can join the team and attend practice so long as they can:

  • jump into water that is over their head without a floatation device
  • make basic forward progress
  • do a basic doggy paddle back to the pool edge
  • pull themselves out of the water unassisted

Swimmers do not need to know specific swim strokes before joining the team. They will practice the four basic strokes (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke) during practice. Swimmers age 6 and under will learn freestyle only.

In order to participate in swim meets, however, the Triad League requires swimmers to swim independently for the full length of the pool without a coach in the water. If swimmers cannot do this, they may still practice with the team but will not participate in a meet until they can meet this requirement. Many of the 6 and under swimmers grab the lane line and make slow progress; this is acceptable.

If you do not think your child can make it independently across the pool, consider signing up for the Lil Rays instructional program or inquire about private lessons, which several of the oldest swimmers offer.

How much does it cost?

Swimmer Registration Fees

The swimmer registration fees include a team shirt (if registered by May 20), team swim cap, Swimmingly app access, team parties, ribbons and trophies.

  • First swimmer: $70
  • Second swimmer: $55
  • Third and more swimmers: $50 each

Our registration fees are some of the lowest in the area thanks to the overwhelming generosity and support of the Wellington community.

Swimsuits

Team swimsuits will be available through Reddiset at an additional cost. The team holds a fitting day before the start of the season (announced on the team GroupMe chat). If a family does not wish to purchase a team suit, female swimmers may wear a solid purple or patterned purple swimsuit and male swimmers may wear purple or black jammers.

Parent T-Shirts

Parents may purchase team shirts at registration for an additional cost.

Practice schedule

Swim team practices are held each weekday from May 12 to June 26.

While CMS is in session (May 12-June 10), practices are held in the evening:

  • Ages 6 and under: 5-5:30 p.m.
  • Ages 7-8: 5-6 p.m.
  • Ages 9-10: 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • Ages 11-12: 6-7 p.m.
  • Ages 13+: 6:30-7:30 p.m.

When CMS begins summer break (June 11), practices move to the morning:

  • Ages 13+: 8:30-9:30 a.m.
  • Ages 11-12: 9-10 a.m.
  • Ages 9-10: 9:30-10:30 a.m.
  • Ages 7-8: 10-11 a.m.
  • Ages 6 and under: 10:30-11 a.m.

Additional practice times are available on Wednesday evenings at the Villages at Leacroft pool, located across Prosperity Church Road from the Wellington Community. These are supplemental practices for practicing specific skills:

  • June 10: breaststroke and fly stroke clinic
  • June 17: backstroke and freestyle stroke clinic
  • June 24: starts and turns clinic
Are practices and meets mandatory?

No, but they are recommended in order to get the most out of summer swim. If you are unable to attend some practices and meets due to vacations or other commitments, that is fine.

Families must declare their swimmer as available or unavailable in the Swimmingly app for all swim meets by the stated deadline so the coaches can create accurate individual and relay race entries. ***If you do not mark your swimmer as available by the deadline, your child might not be able to swim in the meet. It is very difficult to add late-entry swimmers after the heats have been created.***

Where are swim meets?

The Wellington Stingrays are part of the Triad Swim League and we swim against other neighborhoods in the North Charlotte and Huntersville area. The neighborhoods in our league area are these: Winchester, Davis Lake, Skybrook, Cedarfield and Wynfield Forest. Half of the swim meets will be hosted at the Wellington Community Pool. The other half will be away meets at another neighborhood pool within 10-20 minutes of Wellington.

Before each swim meet, coaches will send relevant information via GroupMe, including location and arrival time.

What are swim meets like?

Coaches enter swimmers into one or more races: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, medley, or several relays. A swimmer's events will be published before each meet on the SwimminglyFan app.

  • Swimmers age 6 and under swim only freestyle and may possibly be entered into a 4-member relay race.
  • Swimmers age 10 and under swim 1 length of the pool for each race.
  • Swimmers age 11-18 swim 2 lengths of the pool for each race.

During the meet, swimmers will be grouped by age into bullpens. Volunteers lead swimmers age 12 and under from their bullpens to the staging area near the starting blocks. Swimmers age 13+ are responsible for following the progress of the meet and proceed to the staging area independently.

If families are not serving in a volunteer role, they may leave the meet when their swimmers have completed their final race. However, we encourage families to stay and cheer for their friends and teammates. The ending time of a meet varies based on the size of each team participating.

Generally, home team swimmers arrive at the pool at 4:30 p.m. for warmups at 5 p.m. and visiting team swimmers arrive by 5 p.m. for warmups at 5:30 p.m. Meets begin at 6 p.m. Read more about swim meets in the parent handbook.

How often are swim meets?

Swim meets are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting with the intrasquad meet on June 2 and ending with the league championships on Saturday, June 27. Swimmers typically arrive by 4:30 pm (home meets) or 5:00 pm (away meets). Meets begin at 6 p.m.

Is parental involvement required?

Yes, we couldn't do this without parent volunteers! Each swim meet requires many parent volunteers to assist with tasks like these:

  • bullpen parents
  • timers
  • stroke judges
  • meet emcee and starter
  • scorekeeper
  • concessions
  • and more

Every family is expected to volunteer for 6 shifts. Many of the positions are split at a meet, meaning that you get credit for 1 shift if you work half of the meet and get credit for 2 shifts if you work the entire meet.

Don’t worry! You will be able to choose your preferred meets and shifts in order to work around your family’s schedule. Additionally, the volunteer doesn’t have to be mom or dad. Grandma or uncle could volunteer!

Click on the Volunteer tab to get more information about the various roles and to access the volunteer SignUp Genius.

What about inclement weather?

Inclement weather is a regular issue for summer swim league due to pop-up thunderstorms. Wellington Stingrays swim team follows the same protocol for safety at the pool as the lifeguards on duty.

If the weather is not cooperative, or if the coaches determine the pool water temperature is too cold, communication regarding practices or meets will be delivered via the GroupMe app.

What is Lil Rays?

Lil Rays is a new program starting in summer 2026 designed to give beginner swimmers basic swimming skills. If your child isn't quite ready to be on the swim team, the Lil Rays program is a great way to help them learn the skills they’ll need to join the Stingrays team! Check out the Lil Rays tab for more information.

Are non-Wellington swimmers able to join?

Yes, we love having a diverse group of swimmers of all skill levels from all across our local community. Anyone is welcome to join the Wellington Stingrays swim team, even if the family does not live in Wellington. Wellington offers two summer pool membership options for non-resident families.

See the next question for information on purchasing a Wellington pool membership.

Do swim families need to be a member of Wellington pool?

The Triad Swim League rules stipulate that you must be a member of the Wellington Pool in order to participate on the Stingrays swim team. Residents of Villages of Leacroft and Browne's Ferry are automatically considered members. If you live outside of Wellington, Villages of Leacroft, or Browne's Ferry, you must join the Wellington pool to be part of the swim team.

We offer two pool membership options for those who live outside of Wellington, Villages of Leacroft or Browne's Ferry: a full pool membership and a swim team only membership. If an outside membership applies to your family, add your preferred pool membership option to your Swimmingly cart before checking out. If you accidentally check out without adding a membership, the swim team can send you a payment link.

  • Full Pool Membership: This membership gives your entire family access to the pool during opening hours the length of the pool season: Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Additionally, you have access to the Wellington tennis courts year-round. With this membership, you will receive VIZpin access to the pool gate so you can unlock it with your smartphone. If you choose this option, the HOA pool rep will email you instructions in late May before opening day.

    Cost: $450 per family.

  • Swim Team Only Membership: The swim team member(s) can swim at the Wellington pool only for swim team practices, parties, and meets. No other family members may swim. This membership does not include any recreational swimming. It is restricted to swim team activities and includes only the registered swimmers in a family.

    Cost: $175 per family.

If you don't have access to a community pool and want your kids to continue their swim team friendships all summer long, we would love to have you join our pool for the entire summer!
