Team Information

Something for swimmers of all ages!

Discover the joy of competitive swim

Summer swim team offers the opportunity to experience competitive swimming without the demands of club or school leagues. Swim meets are structured to offer events based on the physical capabilities of all ages and abilities.

Some of our swimmers discover a love of the sport during summer league and continue their interest into year-round club swim participation and high school swim team!

Swimming Proficiency

Any swimmer can join the team and attend practice so long as they can:

  • jump into water that is over their head without a floatation device
  • make basic forward progress
  • do a basic doggy paddle back to the pool edge
  • pull themselves out of the water unassisted

In order to participate in swim meets, league requirements include the ability to swim independently for the full length of the pool without a coach in the water.

Swimmers do not need to know specific swim strokes before joining.

Practice Schedule
Check back for the 2025 schedule!

Are practices and meets mandatory?
No, but in order to get the most out of summer swim they are recommended. If you are unable to attend some practices and meets due to vacations or other commitments, that is fine, we just ask that you declare your child as available or unavailable in the Swimmingly app for all swim meets so the coaches know who will be at the meet.
Where are the swim meets?
The Wellington Stingrays are part of the Triad Swim League and we swim against other neighborhoods in the North Charlotte and Huntersville area. The neighborhoods in our league area: Winchester, Davis Lake, Skybrook, Cedarfield and Wynfield Forest. Half of the swim meets will be hosted at the Wellington Community Pool, the other half will be away meets at another neighborhood pool within 10-20 minutes of Wellington.
How often are swim meets?
Swim meets are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting with the intrasquad meet on June 4 and ending with the league championships on Saturday, June 29.
Is parental involvement required?

Yes, we couldn’t do this without parent volunteers! Each swim meet requires many parent volunteers to assist with tasks like:

  • transitioning kids to/from the bullpens and lining them up for their events
  • providing timers for each lane
  • stroke judges
  • meet emcee and starter
  • ribbons and heat awards
  • scorekeeper
  • concessions
  • and more

Every family is expected to volunteer at 3-4 swim meets, but don’t worry you will be able to choose which meets you are able to volunteer in so you can work around your family’s schedule. It doesn’t have to be mom or dad — grandma or uncle could volunteer!

Are non-Wellington swimmers able to join?

Yes, we love having a diverse group of swimmers of all skill levels from all across our community. Anyone is welcome to join the Wellington Stingrays swim team, and we also have summer pool membership options for non-resident families.

Do swim families need to be a member of the Wellington pool?

Yes, but the Wellington Community Pool has two membership options: a limited swim team only membership (month of June) and a full summer pool membership for the whole family (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Residents of Villages of Leacroft are not required to join our pool since the Leacroft HOA supports the Stingrays by donating their neighborhood pool for evening practices.

Swimmers outside the immediate adjacent communities — Brownes Ferry and Cheshunt — must join the Wellington pool at one of the membership levels (swim season or full season).

If you don’t have access to a community pool and want your kids to continue their swim team friendships all summer long, we would love to have you join our pool for the full summer!

“We love the camaraderie of swim team. It’s part of what makes this neighborhood so special. So many families know each other and much of that is due to the swim team. Our team teaches our children to put forth effort. Every swimmer on the team is important, whether the child is 5 or 15, talented or still learning the basics. I love the support the parents give to all the swimmers on the team. The positive attitude of our families is so much different than what kids experience on many sports teams.”

“We moved to Wellington 8 summers ago. We didn’t know anyone and we had just welcomed our second child. Our daughter (then 5) joined the swim team in hopes of meeting friends. Thank goodness for that! Not only was she quickly accepted and engulfed by the entire team, but so were we. Our sweet neighbors were welcoming us to Charlotte. They were inviting us to playdates, their homes, and churches. We immediately had a community.”

“In a neighborhood with many young families, the Stingrays bring together children and parents in friendship and camaraderie in a way that otherwise wouldn’t happen. We have been so blessed by the community, which affects not only our community, but participation from everyone involved. Older kids volunteer to serve the younger age groups in the water everyday which provides excellent opportunities to grow as loving individuals.”

“We have been participating in the Wellington Swim Team for the past 2 years with our 4 kids and plan on continuing for many more years. It has not only taught our kids to become much stronger swimmers, but it has shown them the importance of commitment, practice, setting goals, and how to participate in a team environment. Our nearby neighborhood doesn’t have a pool, so being able to swim at Wellington has meant a lot to us and we feel a sense of community being on the team. As parents, we’ve also enjoyed meeting other families and having the opportunity to access this wonderful neighborhood resource which brings people together every summer.”
