LIL Rays

Begin their love of swimming today!

Discover the joy of competitive swim

Summer swim league is a great opportunity to learn to love the sport of swimming. In order to participate on the swim team, children must be able to swim the length of the pool (25 meters) unassisted. They can temporarily use the lane line, but cannot have a coach in the water with them. If your child is not yet at this level, the Lil Rays program is a great way to help them learn the skills they’ll need to join the Stingrays team!

Find answers to your questions below.

Swimming Proficiency

Lil Rays swimmers must be comfortable putting their face and ears (or whole head) under the water for 1-2 seconds with direct supervision. During the Lil Rays sessions, swim coaches will help your child learn swimming skills such as:

  • breath work and front floating
  • freestyle stroke
  • kicking fundamentals

Depending on your child’s current swimming abilities, small groups may be reorganized to allow similar skill levels to be grouped together.

Lil Rays coaches are responsible for no more than 3 children at any given time. Swimmers not receiving direct instruction must remained seated on the wall.

All Lil Rays swimmers must be potty trained and not need to wear swim diapers in the pool.

Lil Rays swimmers do not participate in swim meets. However if your child is able to demonstrate they can independently swim the length of the pool they will be invited to swim a 25-meter freestyle exhibition in the last home meet of the season on June 16.

    Is parental involvement required?

No, but parents are required to be on the pool deck and monitoring their child(ren) at all times during the Lil Rays session. If a child needs to use the bathroom, only an authorized caregiver will be able to assist the child.

Parents will be asked to provide assistance in the case of behavioral or participation issues, but we ask that parents allow the Lil Rays coaches be able to coach without parental interference during the sesssions. Children who do not follow the instruction of their coach will be asked to sit on the wall to ensure their safety and the safety of the other children in their group.

“We love the camaraderie of swim team. It’s part of what makes this neighborhood so special. So many families know each other and much of that is due to the swim team. Our team teaches our children to put forth effort. Every swimmer on the team is important, whether the child is 5 or 15, talented or still learning the basics. I love the support the parents give to all the swimmers on the team. The positive attitude of our families is so much different than what kids experience on many sports teams.”

“We moved to Wellington 8 summers ago. We didn’t know anyone and we had just welcomed our second child. Our daughter (then 5) joined the swim team in hopes of meeting friends. Thank goodness for that! Not only was she quickly accepted and engulfed by the entire team, but so were we. Our sweet neighbors were welcoming us to Charlotte. They were inviting us to playdates, their homes, and churches. We immediately had a community.”

“In a neighborhood with many young families, the Stingrays bring together children and parents in friendship and camaraderie in a way that otherwise wouldn’t happen. We have been so blessed by the community, which affects not only our community, but participation from everyone involved. Older kids volunteer to serve the younger age groups in the water everyday which provides excellent opportunities to grow as loving individuals.”

“We have been participating in the Wellington Swim Team for the past 2 years with our 4 kids and plan on continuing for many more years. It has not only taught our kids to become much stronger swimmers, but it has shown them the importance of commitment, practice, setting goals, and how to participate in a team environment. Our nearby neighborhood doesn’t have a pool, so being able to swim at Wellington has meant a lot to us and we feel a sense of community being on the team. As parents, we’ve also enjoyed meeting other families and having the opportunity to access this wonderful neighborhood resource which brings people together every summer.”
